A SUBARU WAGON FIT TO HANDLE SNOWMAGEDDON

EDITOR WES RAYNAL: This 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek 2.0i Premium actually made me hope for more snow. Yes, that’s right: It’s that much fun in the slop. I’m a big Subaru wagon fan, always have been, and this car cements it all the more for me.

I had the good fortune to get in this baby on a recent Monday afternoon, right after snowmageddon. The little dear got me home no problem, clambering over the snow and slop without complaint.

I like the way the car looks. It fits the car’s spirit, its personality. There’s an honesty here. Nothing fancy, nothing gimmicky. The seats are cloth and you actually have to use a key to start it — no push buttons here. You also have to turn the headlamps on and off. I have no problem with any of that.

The drivability (at least in the mess) is fantastic and I don’t care if it doesn’t have ginormous horsepower. The car just works for me. Again, no surprises here, no gimmicks. Just solid, steady as she goes, in the mess we’ve had here the lately.

Inside is typical Subaru. Everything clearly marked, comfortable seats, build quality looks better than past Subarus I recall.

Could it use more sound insulation? Heated seats? Probably; but look at the sticker: As-is this is a really good car at a good price.

ONLINE FEATURES EDITOR JAKE LINGEMAN: Yep, I agree with everything Wes said. This car kicks ass in the snow. It’s even more fun if you turn off the traction control and let the symmetrical all-wheel-drive system do the work. I was barely slowed, let alone stopped.

I will probably never buy a car with a CVT, but boy, they are getting quite livable. And Subaru has it down pat. You get a quick response from the pedal — it still revs high when you put your foot down — but it does its little fake shifting thing to make it feel like there are gears in there. When going at a decent speed it has no problem raising the revs and passing other drivers. Is it a fast car? No, but quick enough to be livable on a daily basis. It’s obviously a little bit noisy when the revs are high.

I like the cloth seats, though, yes, I would ask for heat, but the look is cool. The controls are easy to use and reach and thenew StarLink radio is way better than the old version. There is plenty of space in back, I picked up a lawnmower before the summer rush, had no problem folding the seats down and sliding it in. It has a low-load floor, so it was easy getting it out on my own, too.

The look might be polarizing, but I like it. It’s one of the few cars that doesn’t look terrible with black cladding on the bottom. I like the black polished wheels, too; a light color and those black wheels are a good combo.

This XV comes with Subie’s EyeSight system that watches everything around the car. It beeps when you hit the lane marker, beeps when you approach a car too quickly and it even beeps when the car in front pulls away and you’re still sitting there. It’s a little annoying, but the system works well. I wonder if it would help teach drivers to keep their eyes on the road through some Pavlovian beeping response.

Good car, great price, as long as the out-of-the-ordinary body style doesn’t turn you off.
