Subaru used this month’s 2012 New York Auto Show to introduce its revamped Legacy sedan, which has been spruced up for the 2013 model year with some minor visual changes and a new and improved boxer four-cylinder engine in the base 2.5i model.

The visual changes are barely worth a mention and consist mainly of a revised grille and headlight design, as well as some new interior trim options.

The new engine, however, is a major improvement.

Based on Subaru’s third-generation horizontally-opposed ‘boxer’ design, the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder is rated at 173 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. These numbers may be similar to those of the previous 2.5-liter unit but the latest engine produces greater low-end torque while also using less fuel.

Estimated gas mileage is a combined 27 mpg, which is impressive considering the vehicle’s size and standard all-wheel drive system.

There’s no Legacy 2.5GT model offered in 2013 but those wanting more power can still call on the 3.6R variant, which comes with a 256-horsepower 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine and five-speed automatic. A downshift “blipping” feature adds a sporty feel on this models. The base four-cylinder model, meanwhile, is offered with a standard six-speed manual or second-generation Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission), the latter coming with a six-speed manual mode.

The other major addition on the 2013 Subaru Legacy is the automaker’s new EyeSight driver-assist system, which integrates Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. Combined with the vehicle’s surefooted all-wheel drive system, stability control and roster of airbags, the EyeSight system should ensure the 2013 model retains the Legacy’s top marks in independent crash testing.
