Subaru Enters Compact SUV Fray With XV Crosstrek – Ruge’s Subaru

Subaru of America said it will expand its lineup for 2013 with a compact crossover called XV Crosstrek. The car maker, which is a unit of Fuji Heavy Industries LTD., said it will unveil the vehicle at next month’s New York International Auto Show and begin selling it in the fall.

The XV Crosstrek shares its platform with the compact Impreza car, but the company said it reworked parts of the chassis and body and gave it a greater ride height to better suit its crossover mission.

The compact crossover segment has begun to grow rapidly as car makers seek the consumer sweet spot in vehicle size and shape between cars and trucks. The category also stretches from low- to high-end models, with makers form Mazda to Buick to Porsche rolling out or planning new models.

Subaru said the XV Crosstrek is powered by a 2-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 148 horsepower. Like its Impreza sibling, it has all-wheel drive and comes with a five-speed manual or continuously-variable transmission that Subaru calls Lineartronic.

The company said fuel-economy ratings from the Environmental Protection Agency are not available, but it expects the vehicle to travel 25 miles per gallon in city driving and 33 mpg on the highway. Subaru said the XV’s fuel tank holds 15.9 gallons, or 1.4 gallons more than the Impreza’s tank.
